Abstract

The late medieval Gaelic manuscript National Library of Scotland (NLS) MS 72.1.40 once had a makeshift binding composed of a bifolium of an earlier Latin manuscript subsequently repaired with deerskin. The Latin manuscript has now been identified as part of an Irish double psalter probably of the ninth century, making it the oldest known specimen. The identification was made using enhanced photographs supplied by NLS.
